How does it work? Glycolic Acid (GA) works by stimulating new growth of skin by decreasing the bond that holds dead skin cells on the surface. This allows dead cells to be exfoliated gradually, leaving behind a layer of smoother and softer skin. They can also help with a number of other common skin problems. They help minimize wrinkles and fine lines, and exfoliate, brighten and smooth rough dull skin.

 

An effective acne treatment: Glycolic peels also help to unclog pores and decrease the tendency for acne to develop. A study in Japan on acne treatment found that over a course of 5 glycolic peels of 20%-50% strength 1-5 weeks apart showed a 94% rate of improvement marked as excellent. 

 

Glycolic acid peels are suitable for any skin type and the best choice for dark skin types such as black skin. During a GA peel, a solution of glycolic acid is applied to your skin for a brief period of time, and then washed away. After peeling your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight and you should always use a high SPF sunscreen of 30 or above when outdoors until your skin is fully healed to avoid unwanted pigmentation.

 

Lighter solutions produce lighter peels with virtually no healing time required. Some redness and irritation is likely, this usually decreases as your skin becomes more used to the peeling process. For treatment of deeper wrinkles and scars a 25% - 35% TCA solution is usually recommended. 

 

Warning: Do not use at full strength, if you're a beginner begin at lighter strengths such as a 10-20% solution and gradually increase. Do not exfoliate too often or too much which can lead to raw irritated skin. Do not use if you're pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, breast feeding, have diabetes or any other medical condition which effects the healing process, or are on medication without first consulting with your physician. If you notice any complications or strange side effects consult your physician immediately.
